Berklee: La Puerta Hacia Mis Sueños.

FOTA

I am Jorge Romano, songwriter, proudly Mexican, coursing my first semester at Berklee. I have devoted my entire life to music, it is the daily force that drives me to live and dream. After working with Mexican songwriter Juan Gabriel as his BG vocalist and successfully participating in the Reality Show “La Voz” (The Voice), I decided to lift my gaze and search for new horizons that would enable taking my career to further degrees.

No doubt, Berklee would be the great door towards my dreams. I knew I would meet people from all over the world who would impact the way I listen, create and perform music; unique teachers with successful careers who would become role models, where the university’s projects and spaces would expose me to the leaders of the music industry.

FOTAAfter a year of hard work to attain the financial means, I can finally say I belong to the Berklee community. During this Fall 2014 I have strived to become involved in the university’s activities and contribute to the projects of my peers. Last October presented me with my first opportunity within campus, when I was selected together with 8 of my peers from Kenya, the United States, El Salvador and Colombia to be part of ‘Singer’s Night’, where I had the chance to sing my original: Antes de Partir, at Berklee Performance Center.

It was last week when I understood you must be prepared for the unexpected at Berklee. At noon on Saturday I received a message asking me if I would be interested in traveling to Miami to sing at a Berklee event. I was told there was no time to rehearse and I must work on 11 songs. I immediately said yes! It was nine o’clock that night when I received an email from the project’s musical director and Berklee colleague, Esther Rojas, with a list of songs, two of which would be performed by me. The repertoire was a selection of Latin American titles showcasing the music from Colombia, Mexico and Venezuela. We prepared the rest of the songs to accompany emerging artist Fantine, and pop star Jon Secada.

FOTAI got together with the band to rehearse for a couple of hours on Sunday and Monday. We left for Miami on Tuesday. We had been invited to play at America’s Summit, hosted by the Clinton Foundation on its 20th Anniversary. The ‘Future of the Americas’ (FOTA) event is set to gather the most influential businessmen, philanthropists, educators and leaders of Latin America, North America and the Caribbean to address the issues that affect all inhabitants of Planet Earth.

We practically devoted the entire sound check to the invited artists. I must note that they were very kind to us and that their humbleness is a reflection of their professionalism. I clearly perceived the band’s confidence, and enjoyed our friendliness and camaraderie.

FOTABefore going up on stage with my colleagues, the Mayor of Miami, Tomás Pedro Regalado, took the microphone to thank Bill Clinton for supporting his career and to highlight the importance of having unifying events like FOTA. Afterwards, Bill Clinton spoke about the significance of this Summit for the progress of the Americas, expressing his pride for the 20th Anniversary of FOTA, and encouraging the attendees to continue contributing to the cause for many years to come. Third but not least, President of Berklee College of Music, Roger H. Brown, invited the attendees to support the art, culture, and particularly the music of Latin America. He presented the Berklee-FOTA Band and introduced each member of the band by name, while inviting Fantine on stage.

As usual, time flies when you are on stage. We concluded the show sharing the same feeling: complete satisfaction! I spotted among the attendees Gloria and Emilio Estefan, who danced to ‘El Gavilán’ performed by talented Venezuelan singer Marianella Rojas. Former President of Peru, Alejandro Toledo; Mexican tycoon Carlos Slim Jr.; IADB President, Luis Alberto Moreno, Colombian businessmen, Alejandro Santo Domingo and Carlos Julio Ardila; and some members of the Venezuelan Cisneros Family were also there.

FotaPlaying alongside my University peers beyond the ensemble halls at such an important real life event was a wonderful experience. My gratitude goes towards the creativity of Javier Limón, who endeavored to present the project at the event, to the professionalism and lessons of the show’s producer, Oscar Stagnaro, and to the leadership of musical director Esther Rojas. I thank Roger Brown for placing his trust on us to represent the Berklee College of Music.

Upon concluding my first semester, I have experienced things I never imagined. I can clearly state there was no mistake; Berklee is the door to my dreams.
